Chapter II: The Companions and the Spiral

Along a misted ridge overlooking a blighted wood, Maegnar met two who would soon become far more than fellow travelers—Kaelen, the silent-eyed tracker with a sharp bow and sharper instincts, and Mok, the iron-backed axe-bearer whose loyalty struck harder than steel.

Kaelen, a young half-elf, carried himself with sharp awareness and quiet purpose. His travel-stained cloak spoke of long roads walked alone, and his eyes missed little—even in the fog. He preferred observation to conversation, and his bow rarely needed a second shot.

Mok, a stocky and formidable Urvakkin—one of the beastfolk often called Stonefur—moved with the silent gravity of deep earth. His coarse grey fur, worn mining leathers, and weather-beaten axe marked him as a creature of toil and tenacity. He did not speak often, but when he did, it was with the weight of stone.

Bound by omen and quiet fate, the three ventured into the outer edges of the Grove’s reach—where corrupted roots whispered forgotten truths. There, Maegnar first encountered the Spiral Basin, a place echoing memory so deeply it responded to vow alone. With his companions watching, Maegnar laid the first line of his truth: a vow not to destroy, but to remember rightly.

It was then the Grove began watching.
