Chapter IV: The Flame That Answers
After pressing beyond the Wyrmgut horrors, Maegnar and his companions emerged into the silence of Greyfen Hollow, a village too quiet for its chimneys' smoke. There, in Thalwen’s abandoned refuge, they uncovered a sealed scroll. Its message was clear—she had descended into Hollowshade, chasing a force that twisted the Blight into something forged, not just grown.
Determined to follow, the trio pressed onward through forest and fog. Along the way, they gathered roots, meat, and a curious ashsteel flake, while Maegnar felt his weapon hum in his hand—his instincts sharpened by something ancient and alert.
At Hollowshade’s broken threshold, a motionless guardian statue watched the gate. But with words of peace and purpose, Maegnar was allowed to pass. The guardian left its halberd-hammer behind—Vigilbrand—a token of judgment, respect, or warning.
Inside the first halls of Hollowshade, they fought and overcame a root-bound beast. Its chest held a glowing core, and it fed on a scout marked with Thalwen’s sigil. The trail led deeper, to a long-sealed forge.
By oath and token, Maegnar opened it—revealing the Ember Vault, the heart of this ancient place. There, he entered alone.
He did not demand power. He asked—truthfully—for a bond.
And the forge answered.
Maegnar’s hammer was awakened—Tharâgrin, “The Flame That Answers”—its soul bound to his, radiant in the presence of rot.
Upon returning, the statue moved. It spoke in stone-deep voice:
“Seek the Grove-That-Was…where the tree sings in silence, and the traitor’s seed still burns.”
A new path lay ahead.
With chamber sealed, relics packed, and purpose burning anew, Maegnar and his allies returned to Greyfen Hollow—quiet now, but holding answers in shadowed corners.
